The truth is, I was in a shame spiral for most of my life. If we lost a soccer game because I didn’t score a goal, I shamed myself for losing. If someone wanted to hang out because they missed me, I shamed myself for not reaching out sooner. If I made a mistake with a client (which I did last week) or put something off, I shamed myself because I didn’t do it right the first time.

WHAT I REALIZED IS THAT I WAS DOING ALL THE OUTER, PHYSICAL WORK to make myself feel better - LIKE CHANGING MY DIET AND EXERCISING HARD. BUT I WASN’T DOING THE INNER WORK TO CALM MY BODY AND CHANGE MY THOUGHT PATTERNS - WHICH, AS IT TURNS OUT - WERE HAVING A DIRECT IMPACT ON MY shame spiral.

Most people are missing this piece when they make the effort to feel better. When you’re in a shame spiral, you feel that rush of adrenaline and a sinking feeling in your heart that sometimes - if you’re like me - lingers a bit too long for comfort. Oftentimes, this comes from stewing in our own negative thought patterns. We get stuck repeating negative thoughts over and over again. This keeps us in a holding pattern where it’s easy to think those negative thoughts instead of brainstorming solutions for moving through a problem that triggers the negative thoughts in the first place.
