Grief Counseling
There is no time limit on grief, but there is a time limit on your health.
After suffering a loss, maybe you’ve:
Felt stuck in sadness and/or anger
Lost encouragement to be active
Felt less joy and are afraid you’ll never feel it again
Succumbed to negative thoughts
Felt like you’re not heard in the way you want to be
Began eating your emotions
Filled the void with sugars
Had low self-esteem
Had unexplained weight gain and physical pain
Had gut issues like indigestion, constipation, or diarrhea
Here’s the thing - I’ve been doing this work for over five years professionally and over 20 years personally - and I’ve learned a hell of a lot about resistance. The definition of resistance is the refusal to accept or comply with something or the attempt to prevent something by action or argument.
So many of us talk ourselves out of doing something - like healing our gut or going to therapy - by action or argument. Through actions, we self-sabotage. Perhaps we eat something we know will cause pain or discomfort, or we intentionally don’t reach out to a therapist, which we know - deep down - will help us. Through argument, we might tell ourselves that it’s not worth it to change our entire lifestyle so we can feel better. “Others have it worse off, I shouldn’t be complaining about this” or “This is normal for me and I’ve been dealing with it for so long, why should I change now” are common phrases I’ve heard over the years.
A lot of this resistance has to do with unprocessed grief. WHAT, you ask?
So many of us hold onto all the (bad/hard) things that have happened in our lives, and carry them with us every day. The can manifest as anxiety, body pain, depression, gut issues, hormone imbalances, and/or autoimmune diseases. A lot of those may be trauma-related, and that can lead to unprocessed grief around these events.
The truth is, your thoughts can tell you you’re ready to “heal your gut” but if your body is telling you “hell no” in the slightest bit (through body pain, anxiety, gut issues, etc.), it means you aren’t ready to make any big shifts in your lifestyle (and that includes changing your diet).
In order to truly be able to heal your gut, you have to deal with the grief and trauma first. Otherwise, you’ll never be able to properly heal.
